Walsall Connected Annual Report - Year Four - Case Study: Refugee Migrant Centre
Supporting a family to access education
Background
A family moved to Walsall. The household included three dependent children: one of primary school age and two of secondary school age. Due to their circumstances, the children had been out of formal education for approximately eight months. The family required urgent support to secure appropriate school placements, particularly for the eldest child, who was approaching GCSE study age.
Support provided
The Refugee Migrant Centre worked closely with the family and relevant statutory partners to resolve the situation. Support included:
- Completion and submission of mid-year school admission applications.
- Liaison with Walsall Council’s School Admissions Team and referral to the Children Missing Education Team.
- Completion of Walsall Fair Access Panel (Secondary) referral documentation, including the collation and submission of required supporting evidence.
- Guidance and practical support to apply for free school meals, school uniforms and transport assistance to remove financial barriers to attendance.
How residents benefited
- All three children secured school places in local schools.
- The family was supported to formally accept the places and navigate the next steps outlined by the schools.
- Successful applications were made for free school meals, school uniforms and bus passes, ensuring the children could attend school consistently and without additional financial pressure.
Outcome
This timely, coordinated support enabled the children to re-enter education after a prolonged period out of school, supporting their academic development, wellbeing and long-term opportunities. The parent expressed high satisfaction with the support received and provided positive feedback on the service.
