Restricted speed zones

Reducing your speed when driving makes a huge difference to the number and severity of crashes and injuries. You can find tips and resources about road safety, as well as links to statistics and reports on the Think! website.

20 zones

We have '20 zones' across the Borough, where we encourage you to reduce your speed by using traffic calming features. You can use our online reporting form if you want us to assess your road for possible traffic calming measures.

20mph speed limit

The 20mph speed limit is for residential estates only. It is enforceable and covered by a traffic regulation order, so you could be fined if you speed. You'll see a pair of 20mph speed limit signs where zone starts, smaller signs at regular intervals, and road markings.

There are several areas in Walsall with a 20mph speed limit:

  • Broadway Estate (Sandringham Avenue)
  • Summer Hayes (The Hayes)
  • Pheasey Estate
  • Rushall (Barns Lane)

Road safety schemes

Email the road safety team if you’re worried about road traffic accidents, speeding, poor visibility, or a lack of pedestrian facilities in your area. We will look into any accident history and speed data, and see if there are schools or shops nearby. We’ll then decide which problems we should look at first. Once we've looked into a request for road safety measures, we'll put it into one of the following categories:

VASS remind motorists of the speed limit. We can place them when data shows vehicles are regularly speeding, but the site doesn’t qualify for physical measures.

The LSS programme ensures that we comply with the road safety duties detailed in the Highways Act 1980.

LSS sites with a minimum of six personal injury collisions in the previous three years can be included in the programme.

Sites with fewer than six personal injury collisions in the previous three years can be included in this programme where the first year rate of return is less than 100%.

We consider sites using the following criteria:

  • length and width of road to be treated
  • number of properties directly and indirectly affected
  • collisions
  • amenities (for example, schools, shops, open spaces)
  • cost per property
  • first year rate of return when points are equal

As part of the AStars programme, schools can produce action plans to support modal shift targets. These schemes fall under the SRTS programme.

We base our initial assessment on the need for a scheme, such as number of accidents around the school.

Secondary assessment is based on how actively the school promotes road safety and sustainable travel, for example cycle training.

You can request a crossing to help pedestrians and cyclists to cross a road. We will consider the following facilities:

  • pedestrian refuge islands / nartrings
  • zebra crossings
  • toucan crossings
  • puffin crossings
  • pegasus crossings

We will assess your request using the following criteria:

  • degree of conflict between pedestrians and vehicles
  • pedestrian collisions
  • volumes of pedestrians
  • first year rate of return
  • public amenities (for example, schools, open spaces)
  • whether there is an existing facility

We will consider schemes using the following criteria:

  • partner funding
  • cycle flows (existing usage)
  • contribution to the cycling strategy
  • extension to an existing cycle network (national or local)
  • contributes to other road safety priorities
  • cycle collisions
  • cost benefit
