Rename your house or street
Renaming your house
If your house has an official name (instead of a number) you can apply to change it. There is a fee for this service.
You'll need to download and complete the application form below and send it back to us. You can do this by email or by post to the address on the form.
We will contact Royal Mail and the local Land and Property Gazetteer custodian to see if there is a similar named property nearby. If the name is acceptable, we will issue you with an official renaming plan. If it’s not, we will ask for another name.
We will also tell the statutory authorities. This includes the emergency services, Ordnance Survey and relevant council services. It’s your responsibility to tell your personal contacts.
Naming your house unofficially
If your house has a number, you can add an unofficial name to it as long as it does not conflict with an existing property name in the area.
You don't need to tell us about it, and there is no charge. You must carry on using your house number in your address after the name.
Renaming your street or renumbering your house
You can apply to change your street name or house number if:
- there is confusion over a street’s name and/or numbering
- a large group of residents are unhappy with their street name
- several new properties in the street need to be accommodated
- there is a superstitious reason, for example the number 13
There is a fee for this service.
You'll need to download and complete the application form below and send it back to us. You can do this by email or by post to the address on the form.
We will only make changes after consultation with residents and Royal Mail.
