Birch Wood
This is primarily an oak wood with much overcrowded birch with rowan. Holly and regenerating aspen and rowan form the understorey. The wood has a ground flora typically acidic in nature with tufted hair-grass, wavy hair-grass, creeping soft-grass dominating, but bramble, foxglove, honeysuckle occur with bracken being locally abundant in more open areas.
On the wood's western side a large pool is present where sallow does not overhang at the edges. Some interesting vegetation is present including bryophte species such as Sphagnum and Polytrichum spp. Sterile hybrids between bottle edge and cyperus sedge were recorded at the water's edge. Occurring in the pool itself was water crowfoot and broadleaved pondweed.
Management recommendations
Clear small groups of birch and holly to encourage oak regeneration.
