Taxi licensing fees consultation
Walsall Council's Licensing department is consulting on Hackney Carriage and Private Hire vehicle licensing fees. This renewed consultation follows on from the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire vehicle licensing fee consultation, which was conducted between December 2025 and January 2026. Part of this consultation was not completed within the statutory time frame and thus to comply with statutory requirements, we are required to re-consult on the proposed fees.
This consultation includes private hire & hackney carriage vehicle licensing and identification material costs.
We've published our proposed fees for Hackney carriage and private hire vehicle licensing. These changes are part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining standards within the local taxi and private hire industry.
The taxi trade, stakeholders and members of the public are invited to provide their views, feedback, and any comments relating to the taxi vehicle fee proposals.

Legal framework
The proposed fees are put forward under the requirements of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976. This Act allows local authorities to set and review fees for vehicle and operator licences, ensuring they are reasonable and reflect the cost of administration, monitoring, and enforcement.
Section 70 of the Act specifies the process for public consultation, including the requirement to publish proposed changes and consider any objections received before finalising the fees.
Next steps
Following the consultation period, we will review all submissions. All feedback will be considered in accordance with the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 before we make any final decisions. We will then publish and implement the finalised fee structure as per statutory requirements.
