School Streets trial traffic schemes
Walsall Council is seeking feedback on three new Experimental Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) being introduced to support safer journeys to school, reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality. Known as ‘school streets' driving a vehicle on these roads is prohibited during certain times of the day. Additional parking restrictions are also being introduced at some locations to support the effective operation of the scheme.
The schemes will restrict motor vehicle access on roads outside or near schools during drop-off and pick-up times. The aim is to create safer environments for children and families travelling to and from school, while encouraging walking, scooting and cycling and reducing congestion around school entrances. The three new trial schemes build on the success of the 10 'School Street' schemes already operating at primary schools across the borough.
Trial Period and Consultation
Each scheme will initially operate under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order for a maximum period of 18 months, commencing from the start of the new academic year on Tuesday 1 September 2026.
During the first six months of operation, residents, parents, school staff and other stakeholders will have the opportunity to provide comments and feedback. This feedback will be used to help determine whether the schemes should remain in place, be amended or be removed.

St John's Primary School, Walsall Wood
The School Street will operate on Brook Lane, between Brookland Road and Laburnum Road, during term time only, Monday to Friday, between 8.15am and 9.15am and between 3.00pm and 4.00pm.
New parking restrictions prohibiting waiting and loading, will also be introduced at locations around the boundary of the School Street zone to support the effective operation of the scheme.

Blue Coat Infant School, Walsall
The School Street will operate on Hanch Place during term time only, Monday to Friday, between 8.00am and 9.15am and between 2.45pm and 3.45pm.

Pelsall Village School, Pelsall
The School Street will operate on School Lane, Old Town Lane between St Margaret's Road and Clarendon Place, and Clarendon Place during term time only, Monday to Friday, between 8.30am and 9.15am and between 2.45pm and 3.45pm.
New parking restrictions prohibiting waiting and loading, will also be introduced at locations around the boundary of the School Street zone to support the effective operation of the scheme.

Resident Access and Enforcement
Residents whose properties are located within the School Street zones will continue to have access to their homes and may apply for free permits allowing them to drive in the zone at all times.
The restrictions will be enforced using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras during the times the restrictions are in operation. There will be signs to inform road users of the location and times of the restrictions and signs to let people know that there is a camera.
If we confirm that your vehicle has been in contravention of a restriction, you (the registered keeper) will receive a PCN in the post. The cost of a PCN is £70.00 reduced to £35.00 if payment is received within 21 days of the notice date (stated on the PCN).
