Food waste consultation 2025
Food waste collections will not be introduced for residents in Walsall from 31 March 2026. We expect to confirm future arrangements for the service later this year. Options for food waste collections are due to be considered by Cabinet in June 2026.
The Environment Act 2021 requires councils in England to collect and recycle glass, metal, plastic, paper, card, and garden waste. From 2026, we must also collect food waste from every household, every week.
Although we must offer this service, using it is your choice. Taking part helps reduce waste and tackle climate change.
The food waste collection service will be rolled out to all households in 2026. To assist preparing to deliver this service, we are consulting residents on aspects of the new food waste recycling service, including the method of collection.
Options for delivering this service
The consultation asks about two possible collection options:
- Option 1: Weekly Separate Food Waste Collection + Small Electricals Collection
- Option 2: Weekly Mixed Food & Garden Waste Collection
Community engagement sessions
We are holding face-to-face engagement sessions at community venues all over the borough to give you the opportunity to talk to officers and give your views.
