Proposed increase in council tax
Approximately 20% of the council's income comes from council tax. Most properties in the borough are in bands A and B.
A 4.99% increase in council tax (made up of a 2.99% general increase and 2% precept for adult social care) for 2025/26 was approved by Full Council on 26 February 2025.
Council tax precept for adult social care
Councils that provide social care to adults are allowed to add an additional amount - called a precept - to council tax, to help fund adult social care.
The income generated from this charge is ring-fenced, meaning it can only be used for adult social care services. It recognises that we experience increased pressures in supporting a growing elderly population.
Due to increased demand and changes in demographics, adult social care continues to face ongoing budget pressures:
- £21.20m is included in the budget for 2024/25
- £25.03m is included in the budget for 2025/26
A 2% increase will generate c£3m to support pressures within the service.
