How to become a school governor

If you volunteer as a school governor you could make a positive contribution to the education of children and young people.

The role of a school governor

Governors are volunteers who are involved with:

• setting the school’s strategic direction
• holding the head teacher to account for the school’s performance
• making sure that the school’s budget is properly managed

If you become a governor, you’ll do this by:

• acting with integrity and in the best interests of all young people
• attending and contributing to meetings
• getting to know the school and understanding its strengths and weaknesses
• attending training

How to apply

Anyone aged 18 or over and living in the UK can become a school governor. You’ll need to be committed and enthusiastic and devote time to the role.
