Exclusion from school

All schools must have a behaviour policy which sets out the school rules.

If a child or young person misbehaves either inside or outside of school, the head teacher can exclude them.

There’s information about exclusions on gov.uk. Find out about:

  • what happens when your child is excluded
  • where you can get support
  • excluding a child who has special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND)

You could also be prosecuted if your child is absent from school without permission.

Support for children and young people with SEND

Speak to the school if your child has SEND and you are concerned they may be suspended or excluded. The school should work with you to ensure the right support is in place for your child. They may need to make reasonable adjustments.

If your child has an education, health and care (EHC) plan, the school should speak to you if they’re worried about their behaviour at an early stage. They can also contact us and ask for an early annual review before deciding to exclude a child.

You can contact us if you need more support and information.
