Gritting
Our winter service includes clearing ice and snow from main roads, and gritting them to stop ice from forming. A road may not be treated along its whole length, and treatment does not guarantee that the road is free of ice and snow. We don’t treat minor roads, car parks or footpaths.

When we run the winter service
The full winter service runs from 1 November to 31 March. We also have a limited response to bad weather in October and April.
Our gritters
You can view gritting routes and salt bin locations using our interactive map:
Salt bins
You will find our salt bins where there are steep gradients or difficult junctions. We fill them up before the winter period and replenish them when needed. The salt bins are for you to use on roads and pavements. Do not use them to treat private driveways or business premises.
Request a new salt bin
You can request a new salt bin by emailing us.
We'll assess each application using the criteria in the winter service operational plan, and update you with progress. If you'd rather print and complete an application form, you can download it below. Send it back to us by email or by post (marked for the attention of the traffic management and coordination team).
