Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport that exercises both the mind and the body. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on a map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time. It does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run, walk or jog the course and progress at your own pace.
The following parks and green spaces have orienteering courses mapped within them.

WALX
WALX are sociable walks lasting approximately 1 hour led by a qualified instructor. They are suitable for all ages and abilities and equipment for the session is provided free. WALX sessions are an enhancement of ordinary walking. WALX sessions use poles resulting in 2 major benefits. The use of poles means the upper body muscles are used as well as the legs. The poles help propel the walker along, meaning the walker works harder, yet the support provided by the poles makes it feel easier. All you will need is to wear sensible footwear and suitable outdoor clothing.
Cost
All WALX are free to attend.
How to book
You can find out more about how to book in to one of our walks by visiting the group page.
There are a range of different WALX you can engage with:
Nordic WALX
Nordic Walking uses poles in order to add two major benefits to walking.
- The use of poles means the upper body muscles are used as well as the legs
- The poles help to propel the walker along – this means you work harder than usual yet the support given by the poles makes it feel easier!
Wellbeing WALX
Gentle WALX that incorporate balance work, flexibility and strength exercises and maybe a bit of Tai Chi or relaxation too. Great for those who are getting back into exercise, have a health condition or simply want to move well and be fit for life!
Our wellbeing instructors are qualified to deliver WALX for all levels, so it’s never too late to take that first step.
Community WALX
Whether you have been referred by your GP, are part of a specific project or simply want to enjoy whole-body pole walking in your local park with local leaders our community WALX will help you to get you active outdoors.
Using the amazing WALX Activator/Urban poles, you will be enjoying total body walking in no time and will be able to progress to join other WALX locally and right across the UK too.
Walsall Walk On is a weekly programme of free health walks held in parks and countryside spaces across the borough. Every walk is led by a trained walk leader alongside a qualified back marker. This means that the walks can be tailored to suit everyone’s speed and ability, whilst walking as a group.
Cost
All walks are free of charge.
How to book
To join any of the walks, simply turn up at the start location fifteen minutes before the walk start time. The walk leader will ask you to complete a health questionnaire and register. The health questionnaire will then highlight any medical conditions that may occur during the walk that the leader needs to be aware of. You will then need to notify the leader of any medical changes that may have occurred each time you attend the walk.
If you haven’t exercised for a while or have a medical condition and are unsure about starting something new, please seek advice from your GP prior to starting. Please make sure that you wear appropriate footwear and dress according to the weather when walking. It may be advisable to bring a drink with you, water is ideal, if you think you may need it.
