Scentsational: New £32 million Walsall waste site smell-proofed

Published on

An odour control system has been installed as part of work to build a new state-of-the-art waste facility in Walsall.

Odour control system

Construction of a Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station in Aldridge began in August 2024. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2025, with a view to operations starting later in the year.

The odour control system, which forms part of the £32 million project, includes six powerful extractor fans and a ventilation system that replaces the air inside the building three times every hour.

The ventilation system removes the odour from the bays and then passes it through a bank of six containers which are full of an active carbon bed. This will ensure any smell generated by waste will not impact surrounding areas in any way.

Dust in the station is also controlled by a high-efficiency filtration system.

“ The project is progressing really well and is starting to take shape. You can now see how it will look, and how impressive it will be once it opens.

“A concern raised by residents was around the smell produced by the site. That is why we have made the investment to mitigate this, ensuring the project works for everyone.

“With growing populations, this is an investment we needed to make. The Facility will serve our communities for years to come.

In addition to the main dour control system, wall-mounted odour and dust control units (Probe Atomisers) will be located 6m above the waste storage bays in four locations within the waste transfer centre.

The atomisers are also treated with an odour-control eliminator called AiroPure. This works by destroying odours immediately by changing their molecular structure and is fragrance-free.
