Ceremonies in a place of worship
Ceremonies in a Church of England or Wales
To get married in a Church of England or Wales, you’ll need to arrange this with the vicar.
They will call the banns in church or issue a common license.
The vicar will register the marriage, so you shouldn’t need to book a separate registrar.
You won’t need to book an appointment to give notice unless one or both of you is a non-EEA national or EEA/Swiss national without EU settlement status. If you’re not sure, you can contact us.

All other religious ceremonies
For all other religious ceremonies, you’ll need to:
- arrange this with the person in charge of marriages at the building
- check if they have a person authorised to register the marriage (a registrar) – if not, you’ll need to book and pay for registrar for your ceremony
- book an appointment with us to give notice
One or both of you should either:
- live in the district where the building is located
- worship regularly at the building
If the building is outside Walsall Borough, you should give notice to the registrar in that district instead.
