Whistleblowing policy (confidential reporting) - 3.0 Raising a concern internally
As stated above, firm evidence of malpractice is not required before a concern can be raised. However, we do ask that you explain as fully as possible the information or circumstances that have led to your concern to enable it to be considered and investigated.
Step one
Where appropriate, for example if your concern is about malpractice, it is hoped you will feel able to raise it firstly within your service. This could be with your team leader or manager. This can be done verbally or in writing. If you choose to raise a concern in person, you can bring someone with you to support you, if you wish to.
Step two
If you feel unable to raise the matter with your manager, for whatever reason, you can raise the matter with the Head of Internal Audit by emailing InternalAuditService@walsall.gov.uk
Please remember if you want to raise the matter confidentially, say so from the outset so that appropriate arrangements can be made. Meetings in person can be arranged and you may bring someone with you for support if you wish.
Step three
If you feel that the matter is so serious that you cannot report locally, or if you have followed the reporting routes outlined above and still have concerns you can contact Protect. This is an independent charity that focusses on ensuring safe whistleblowing. Protect can be contacted by calling 020 3117 2520 or by email at whistle@protect-advice.org.uk All calls to Protect are confidential, they will not contact the Council but their advisers can talk you through your options and help you raise a concern about malpractice at work.
You can also contact your Union representative or professional body (where applicable) for advice.
