School crossing patrols

The school crossing patrol service helps children and adults to get to and from school safely.

To decide where to locate a school crossing patrol, we consider:

  • road/footpath width
  • vehicle speed
  • site visibility
  • age of children crossing the road
  • child pedestrian accident data
  • bus stops in the vicinity of the crossing
  • road junctions

Types of school crossing patrols

We decide on the type based on risk assessments. This is in line with national standards for road safety.

Category 1

A school crossing patrol warden is on duty at specific times during school opening hours because of the potential road safety risks. They are not supported by secondary crossing facilities (for example, pedestrian, pelican, zebra crossings).

Category 2

A school crossing patrol warden is supported by secondary crossing facilities.

Road safety training and awareness in schools

We risk assess every crossing and monitor all personal injury collisions that occur within the borough.

We also work closely with schools to provide road safety education and training for pupils via the A*Stars Programme. The programme provides walking, cycling, scooting and road safety initiatives, along with training and support for schools.
