Martyn’s Law (Protect Duty)
The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Draft Bill, also known as Martyn’s Law, means that venues in Walsall must take action to prevent terrorist attacks.
The government is proposing to introduce new legislation to:
- enhance the protection of publicly accessible places
- ensure that businesses and organisations are prepared to deal with incidents
It means that security preparedness will be delivered consistently across the UK.
You can find all the latest information, including how it will work and who is in scope in the Martyn’s Law factsheet.

How you can prepare
Any location that’s publicly accessible could be a target. As owners and operators, it’s your responsibility to understand the risks to your premises. You should think about what you can do to mitigate these risks. You can do this by:
- understanding the terrorist threat (motivations, targets and methodology)
- understanding how and why your site / organisation might be affected by an attack
- planning what you will do if there’s an attack on or near your premises
There's free advice and guidance to help you understand protective security and improve your response to the risk of terrorism on the ProtectUK website.
