What’s On Walsall – September 2024

A free festival celebrating the local creative community, a display of Sister Dora and Jerome K Jerome’s belongings for Heritage Open Days, comedy from Black Books and Shaun of the Dead star Dylan Moran, and an intimate acoustic gig from the UK’s biggest country music export The Shires are some of the events and exhibitions to expect at Walsall Council venues this September.
HIGHLIGHT
Walsall MakerFest
Saturday 7 September 2024, 11am-5pm. Across Walsall town centre. Free.
A celebration of the rich and diverse creative community within Walsall & the Black Country. Expect live music, dance, storytelling, hands-on workshops, pop-up shops, fashion shows, street food, makers' market and much more across the town centre.
Walsall MakerFest is delivered by Walsall Council in partnership with local non-profit Urban Hax CIC, The New Art Gallery Walsall and Walsall Cultural Compact. It has been supported by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)’s Cultural Development Fund: Round Three through Arts Council England.

Wednesday 11 September, 10.30am-12pm and 12.30-2pm.
Suitable for 0-24 months. Multi-sensory sessions for parents, carers and their babies. £3 per child, places are limited, booking essential. Book at Reception or call 01922 654400.

BSL Tour of Carlos Bunga: Citizen of the World with Olivier Jamin

Join Deaf artist, Olivier Jamin for a BSL led tour of our current Floor 3 exhibition by Carlos Bunga exploring themes of home, transformation, possibility, and adaption. This tour is accessible for D/deaf and hearing people.

Join artist Daniella Turbin with curator of the exhibition Hannah Anderson for an informal walking tour of her exhibition A Place to Return To. Stools are available for visitors if required.

Paper Washing Lines
Saturday 28 September, 11am-3pm. Free, drop-in. All ages welcome.
Explore Daniella Turbin’s exhibition A Place to Return To on Floor 4 then contribute to our giant washing line of decorated paper clothes, construct a folded paper jacket, and make your own mini washing line of clothes to take home.

Walsall Comedy Club – Dylan Moran

Heritage Open Day - Hidden Treasures at Walsall Leather Museum

To celebrate Heritage Open Day, the Leather Museum will be displaying some of our favourite treasures from our reserve collection which will include:
- The Prince Rupert bridle bit
- Jerome K. Jerome’s First World War medical orderly’s tunic and cap
- Sister Dora’s sewing basket, cross and writing case
Stitchers and Skivers
Wednesday 11 September, 10am-1pm and 1.30-4.30pm. £6.50. Booking and pre-payment essential.
Our monthly craft group where everyone is welcome! Each month we try out a new craft with the emphasis on getting stuck in and having a go. We provide materials, support, starter ideas, tea and biscuits and chat! September’s session will explore felting.
Treasure Beneath our Feet - History talk with Ian Bott

The sensational discovery of the ‘Staffordshire Hoard’ near Walsall raised public interest in the fascinating pastime of metal detecting and how the unlikeliest of locations can yield amazing finds. Join Ian, an avid treasure hunter himself, and follow in the footsteps of our ancestors. During their everyday activities, journeys and sometimes skirmishes, they either lost or deliberately concealed the prized metallic artefacts which enthusiasts seek to unearth today. A selection of real treasure finds will be on display.
Leather glasses case workshop with Helen Jones
Saturday 28 September, 10.30am-3.30pm. £50 including all materials. Booking and pre-payment essential.
Join leatherworker Helen Jones to hand make your own lined leather glasses case. You will cut out and prepare your case, hand-stitch and finally add a fastening. You will also have a chance to make a hand-stitched card case during the day. No experience necessary.
