What’s On Walsall – November 2024

Two fun-filled nights of fireworks, Diwali celebrations at The New Art Gallery Walsall, a half-term dance masterclass at Walsall Arena, as well as hands-on creative workshops at Walsall Leather Museum are amongst the events at Walsall Council venues this November.

Walsall’s fireworks are back with a bang! Join us for a firework spectacular that won’t break the bank. A wide range of catering stalls will be waiting to greet you along with our funfair to keep thrill-seekers entertained.

Diwali 2024 – Festival of Lights
Saturday 2 November, 12-4pm. Free, drop-in.
Celebrate the Festival of Lights. Join Peter Chand, one of Europe’s most renowned storytellers, as he tells powerful stories from the Indian subcontinent. The day will also include Bollywood Dreams Dance performances and mini workshops, lamp-making workshop with Daya Bhatti, mehndi and yummy food.
Collections Tour
Saturday 2 November, 2pm. Free
Join Gallery Assistants Julie Jones and Claire Bishop as they explore the theme of light in paintings and drawings in the Collections, inspired by Diwali, the Festival of Lights. They will consider how light reflects on landscapes by Jacob Epstein and Yasmin David and compare it with the spiritual light in works by Odilon Redon and the glistening leaves of a gilt illuminated manuscript.
Free introductory tours on the first Saturday of every month at 2pm.
Sunday Art Club
Sundays, 12-3pm. Age 4+. Free, drop-in.
The Gallery’s weekly art club for children and young people. Meet artists and creatives and learn to paint, print, sculpt, craft, make films and more!
- Sunday 3 November – Paper Cup Tea Lights. Cut, collage & embellish a paper cup to create a tea light for Diwali, with artist Daya Bhatti.
- Sunday 10 November – Paper Birds Make paper birds with moving wings.
- Sunday 17 November – Botanical Tissue Paper Painting Inspired by artist Tania Kovats.
- Sunday 24 November – Natural Watercolour Painting Use spinach, beetroot & turmeric to make paint with Nature makers.
Walk and Draw
Saturday 9 November 2024, 11am-12.30pm. Every second Saturday of the month.
Free. Booking essential.
Make speedy sketches of artworks in the Collections and temporary exhibitions, the Gallery’s architecture, the magnificent views from the Gallery’s windows, and the local area, including the wildlife along the canal, public sculptures and historical buildings along the high street.

Multi-sensory sessions for parents, carers and their babies. Explore colours and light projections, discover new smells, feel new textures in our touchy-feely books and relax in our comfy cushions whilst you listen to a short story and meet other new parents.
Exhibition Preview: Earthbound
Thursday 14 November, 6-8pm. Free, all welcome.
Set within the context of global anxiety about the climate crisis and planetary health research, this major group exhibition presents existing and newly commissioned artworks by 9 artists and community makers that highlight our connection with the earth and our potential to return to a more healthy and harmonious existence with the natural world. It emerges from the argument that, over time, natural and human histories have become so disconnected that we appear to have lost sight of the innate interconnectivity between human and natural life.

Workshop: Masters Of Dance

Looking for a fun, energetic day filled with music and movement? Sign your child up for our Master of Dance Masterclass at Walsall Arena! This exciting event will introduce young dancers to three dynamic styles: Street Dance, Jazz and Contemporary. No experience needed—just bring your energy and enthusiasm! It’s a perfect opportunity for kids to learn new dance styles, make friends, and have fun. Plus, there will be a mini showcase at the end of the day where participants can show off what they’ve learned! Recommended for ages 6-11.

Tim Benzie is obsessed with Murder, She Wrote, having watched the original series when it was first broadcast, and now relishing the repeats on television everywhere. An award-winning playwright and co-writer of the Royal Vauxhall Tavern’s 2017-2023 pantos (‘Goosed’, ‘Rubbed’, ‘Slipped’, ‘Pricked’, ‘Cracked’ and ‘Tossed’). He is the co-producer of the camp club night PopHorror.

Stitchers and skivers
Wednesday 13 November, 10am-1pm and 1.30-3.30pm. £6.50
A monthly craft group where everyone is welcome! Each month we try out a new craft with the emphasis on getting stuck in and having a go. We provide materials, support, starter ideas, tea and biscuits and chat! November’s session will explore slow stitching.
Leather belt-making workshop with Awais Janjua
Saturday 23 November, 10.30am-3.30pm. £55 (all materials included). No experience necessary.
Join leatherworker Awais Janjua for an opportunity to hand-make your own leather belt.
You will learn traditional skills throughout the day such as cutting, paring, dyeing, hand-stitching and adding a buckle. At the end of the session you will leave with a made-to-measure hand-crafted belt.
