What will Walsall’s Arboretum look like in the year 2174? Children asked to embrace creativity to mark 150th anniversary

Published on

Children and young people in Walsall have been encouraged to embrace their creativity and look into the future to mark the 150th anniversary of the borough’s iconic Arboretum.

Clocktower at Walsall Arboretum

Walsall Council has launched a competition for children to submit entries which show how they envisage the Arboretum will look in the year of 2174, 150 years after its 150th anniversary.

Coordinated by the Walsall Arboretum User Group (WAUG) the competition is separated in to two different age groups (7-11 years old and 12-16 years old) and falls into two categories:

  • Poetry and creative writing – handwritten and printed versions, up to 1 side of A4 paper

  • Creative art – paintings, drawings and collage, maximum size of A3. No 3D models.

“ 2024 is the Arboretum’s 150th year, and we’d love all residents of all ages to get involved in what is a very special year for communities in Walsall.

Winning submissions will be displayed in the Arboretum Garden Gallery, and as a prize, the winners will receive Amazon gift card vouchers to recognise their hard work.

The deadline for submissions is Sunday 7 April 2024, so there’s a fantastic opportunity for families to visit during the Easter holidays and be inspired by our beautiful Arboretum during spring.

I wish everyone who submits an entry the very best of luck, and I can’t wait to see all the different interpretations of the year 2174. “
