In March 2023, Levelling Up Partnerships (LUPs) were announced by government as a new place-based approach to policy making and regeneration. Walsall, which is one of twenty Levelling Up areas, is to be one of only 3 or 4 areas designated as a Health LUP.

In October 2023, Walsall Council was also approached by the Department of Health and Social Care with the opportunity to be considered as one of only 3-4 “Healthy LUPs”, recognising some of the key health and inequality problems in the borough. A proposal was subsequently drafted based on harnessing key health benefits of the regeneration opportunities that a LUP would bring.

A paper, due to be presented to cabinet on 20 March 2024, will ask members for their approval to take forward the Healthy Levelling Up Partnership proposal for Walsall.

The proposal to be a “Healthy LUP” will increase the interest amongst Government Departments in how Walsall sets out to tackle the challenges faced.

The Healthy Levelling Up Partnership for Walsall will bring together public and private sector partners along with the council to devise a programme of activity that will create opportunities for Walsall people and tackle health and inequality problems.

“ being selected as one of the key areas to participate in a Healthy Levelling Up Partnership is great news for Walsall. Working with partners across different sectors and communities will help us to make sure plans align with what the people of Walsall need and deserve so we can tackle the inequalities and health issues affecting people’s quality of life. “

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Regeneration
Walsall Council

Walsall will have access to up to £20million to deliver the Healthy Levelling Up Partnership. The partnership will create a programme that supports the “Levelling Up” agenda to create jobs, drive growth and make sure that the people of Walsall feel proud of their hometown.
