Portfolio Holder wishes best of luck to students.

The council’s lead for Education and Skills wishes A-Level and Post-16 students all the very best for their results which are due on 18 August, and for Year 11 students as they prepare to receive their results on Thursday 25 August.

This year students have been back to sitting exams in the usual way. Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools were asked to submit grades to exam boards based on what they believe students were most likely to achieve if assessments had happened as planned and these were standardised by Ofqual, the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation.

Students and staff have demonstrated remarkable resilience over the last two years during continually changing conditions as a result of the pandemic.

“ I would like wish the very best to those students awaiting their A-Levels and post-16 qualifications. No matter what the result you should all be very proud of your achievements especially due to the challenges you have faced over the last few years. I would also like to wish pupils who will be collecting their GCSE results later this week the very best of luck.

Many students will now be embarking on exciting new chapters in their lives and I wish them well for whatever they decide to do next. I would also like to express my thanks to the teachers and all of the wonderful staff in our schools who have continued to teach and support our young people through challenging circumstances.

I recognise that there will be anxiety and uncertainty for many young people in Walsall who may not receive the results they need to take the next step in their journey, whether they are planning on continuing onto post-16 qualifications, attending university, a college or starting a career. We will continue to work with our schools and college to support our young people who have been affected and offer support and guidance. “

Councillor Mark Statham
Portfolio Holder for Education and Skills

If a student does not received the results they were expecting or needed then they should in the first instance speak to their school about the options open to them including appealing their grades. Walsall Council is supporting schools and academies with this offer. There are lots of options available for young people – whether their exam results are as they expected, better or not quite as good as they hoped they would be. These include going on to college, entering the world of work or becoming an apprentice.

If you are a young person with questions about education, training or employment you can contact the Walsall Council Employment and Skills Team on 01922 654352 or Email: walsallworks@walsall.gov.uk. The team provides support through Impact programme which offers one to one customised support and training for young people in Walsall aged 16 and over and not in employment, education or training. It helps them overcome the barriers that may be stopping them from finding and securing training, education or a job.

Walsall Works is a council programme designed to support local people with finding jobs, apprenticeships and training. You can access support from their employment and skills team by emailing walsallworks@walsall.gov.uk or calling 01922 654352 or browsing our website www.walsallworks.com
