Walsall Council has been awarded £558,010 to decarbonise The New Art Gallery Walsall and Bloxwich Launchpad, a space to support the community with access to digital interventions and resources and for small businesses and local start-ups to access advice and support.

The funding will come through the Phase 3c of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, which is run by the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero and delivered by Salix Finance.

The funding will be used to decommission end-of-life boilers and replace them with air source heat pumps. More efficient hot water taps, variable speed drives and double glazing will also be fitted at The New Art Gallery Walsall.

This shift will bring improved efficiency, resulting in substantial energy savings and a significant reduction in carbon emission with a predicted saving of 89 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) per year, and 1,717 tCO2e over the lifetime of the equipment.

“ This is a really exciting project for our area. We have again been successful in gaining funding through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, which is critical to ensure we can install measures to improve energy efficiency in our public buildings, reducing our energy bills and carbon footprint towards our net zero 2041 target. “

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Associate Leader and Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth and Regeneration at Walsall Council
Walsall Council

“ This project will ensure more of our public buildings lead the way in our community to tackle climate action. With 60% of our residents saying they are concerned about climate change and 90% wanting to see organisations work together to help tackle this crisis, we are proud to be taking action again on climate change. “

Councillor Gary Flint, Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing
Walsall Council

“ Walsall Council is steering a fascinating project, and our teams are delighted to work with the council in transforming The New Art Gallery Walsall and Bloxwich Launchpad.

These buildings are valuable local spaces, and the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme will help transform them. The works will not only reduce emissions but make them more comfortable places in which to work, visit and enjoy.

Every day at Salix we are helping organisations meet their net zero targets and we look forward to working with Walsall on this goal with our teams supporting their ambition. “

About Walsall Council’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme Phase 3c project

The project will replace aged fossil fuel boilers with new air source heat pumps to make a switch from fossil fuel to electricity generated from renewable energy. Our buildings are one of our main sources of carbon emissions in Walsall Council. We have been successful in obtaining Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme funding in previous years:

  • Phase 3a: Darlaston Baths
  • Phase 3b: Council House and Civic Centre

This year’s project will reduce our carbon footprint by a further 89 tCO2e per year, and 1,717 tCO2e over the lifetime of the equipment.

The project is being funded by the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero via Salix Finance.

About the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme

The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme is delivered by Salix Finance on behalf of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

222 projects have been awarded a share of £530 million from Phase 3c of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme so far: see the full list of Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme projects. Additional funding will be allocated through Phase 3c in the coming weeks as final award offers are made.

About Salix: Salix’s role is to support the UK government in driving the transition to a low carbon future and meet challenging net zero targets. We deliver and administer grant and loan funding on behalf of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the Department for Education and the Scottish and Welsh governments. This is delivered across the public sector as well as housing.

The schemes we deliver provide funding for energy efficiency and heat decarbonisation projects for public sector buildings as well as the housing sector. Our schemes are dedicated to reducing carbon emissions and supporting the government’s ambitious net zero targets. These programmes include the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, Home Upgrade Grant, the Low Carbon Skills Fund and Scotland’s Public Sector Heat Decarbonisation Fund. We also play an important role in increasing awareness of energy efficiency and heat decarbonisation across the public sector throughout the UK. Our teams work closely with the public sector organisations throughout their decarbonisation journey, from the moment a grant is allocated to the moment the scheme is fully operational.
