The renewed consultation follows an earlier consultation carried out between December 2025 and January 2026. Part of the previous process was not completed within the required statutory timeframe, meaning the council is required to re-consult on the proposed fees to ensure full compliance with legal requirements.

The consultation is open until 5 July; residents and members of the trade can find out more and take part in the consultation by visiting: go.walsall.gov.uk/taxi-fees-consultation

The consultation covers Hackney Carriage and Private Hire vehicle licensing fees, alongside costs for vehicle identification materials including external, internal and side identification plates.

The proposed fees are:

Hackney carriage / private hire vehicle licence£191.09£179.49£39.15

Internal ID£7.36£6.70-
Side ID£16.12£16.12-
Total£250.28£229.72-
Bracket £8.30

The proposed changes are being introduced as part of the council’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high standards across the local taxi and private hire industry while ensuring public safety.

“ “We want to ensure that our licensing services continue to support a safe, well-regulated and professional taxi and private hire trade across the borough. We encourage drivers, operators, stakeholders and members of the public to take part in the consultation and share their views before any final decisions are made.” “

Cllr Rohan Beecha, Chair of Licensing Committee
Walsall Council

The proposed fees are put forward under the requirements of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976. This Act allows local authorities to set and review fees for vehicle and operator licences, ensuring they are reasonable and reflect the cost of administration, monitoring, and enforcement.

Section 70 of the Act specifies the process for public consultation, including the requirement to publish proposed changes and consider any objections received before finalising the fees.

Following the consultation period, all feedback received will be reviewed and considered before the final fee structure is confirmed and implemented in line with statutory requirements.
