Walsall Council to explore potential to purchase derelict Ravenscourt Shopping Centre in Brownhills
Published on
In a meeting on Wednesday 18 March, Walsall Council’s Cabinet approved a report setting out plans to make enquiries to purchase the freehold title to Ravenscourt Shopping Centre.
Ravenscourt is a 1960’s shopping centre in the heart of Brownhills that has been derelict for over a decade. The dereliction has had a noticeable impact on the surrounding area with a history of associated antisocial behaviour, and the local community has long called for the site to be developed.
In 2021 Ravenscourt Shopping Centre was purchased by a business with development plans which the council was supportive of; selling its land within the centre and working with the business to secure any additional land needed for the project. However, by 2025 the business confirmed it was not viable for them to continue.
“ Gaining cabinet approval to explore the potential to purchase Ravenscourt is a fantastic step forward. The site has been a long standing blight on the Brownhills community, and residents have consistently told us they want to see it demolished and transformed into something that creates real opportunities and lasting value for local people.
Brownhills has been let down by Tesco and now ALDI with their promises to redevelop the site with 100% support from the Council, but both have pulled out. It is hugely frustrating and annoying that previous private sector plans have not progressed and the council is not afraid to intervene. We will use our powers and resources to drive regeneration and ensure sites like this are brought back into meaningful use for the benefit of our communities. “
With the report approved, Walsall Council can now begin its enquiries for the potential purchase of the shopping centre, which will enable the council to bring it forward for much-needed regeneration.
