Ten.8 afterimage explores the enduring legacy of Ten.8 (1979–1992), a groundbreaking photography journal that emerged from the Midlands’ radical cultural and political landscape. The exhibition brings together historic and contemporary photographic works that reflect on the journal’s role in shaping critical debates about representation, visibility, power and politics. It includes pieces produced in the 1980s and 1990s alongside new work, with artists such as British Ghanaian visual artist Heather Agyepong, Vanley Burke, Chila Kumari Singh Burman, Lorna Simpson, James Van Der Zee and many more featured. Full list of artists can be found here.

Ten.8 afterimage has been developed in partnership with International Curators Forum (ICF) and curated by Pelumi Odubanjo, who was selected through an open call for ICF’s 18-month Ten.8 Curatorial & Research Fellowship jointly supported by both organisations. The partnership reflects a shared commitment between ICF and The New Art Gallery Walsall to champion diverse perspectives, nurture curatorial talent and promote a more inclusive, poly-vocal approach to programming. The Fellowship has been supported by The Foyle Foundation, The Hollick Family Foundation, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, and Art Fund, with mentoring from members of the original Ten.8 editorial team, ensuring both historical insight and contemporary relevance underpin the project.

“ We are thrilled to support the opening of Ten.8 afterimage at The New Art Gallery Walsall. This exhibition celebrates the rich history of critical photography while sparking important conversations about culture, identity and society. It’s a fantastic opportunity for residents, visitors and schools alike to engage with challenging and inspiring work right here in Walsall. “

Councillor Gary Flint, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Health and Wellbeing at Walsall Council.

Ten.8 afterimage promises to be a highlight of the 2026 cultural programme and further strengthens Walsall’s reputation as a centre for contemporary art and dialogue.
