Walsall has reached a major milestone, with 1,000 food businesses now holding the highest possible 5-star Food Hygiene Rating.

Out of 1,720 rated establishments across the borough, 1,000 have achieved a rating of 5 – Very Good, demonstrating consistently high standards of food safety, cleanliness and management.

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme inspection is designed to assess risk to public health and is split into three key areas: food hygiene practices, the structure and cleanliness of the premises, and food safety management systems.

Inspectors assess how safely food is handled, including preparation, cooking, cooling, reheating and storage, as well as measures in place to prevent cross-contamination. They also consider the condition and maintenance of the building, the adequacy of handwashing facilities, ventilation and pest control, and review the business’s food safety management procedures, including record keeping and monitoring.

“ Reaching 1,000 five-star food hygiene ratings is a fantastic achievement for Walsall and reflects the hard work and commitment of our local businesses.

“A 5-star rating is not awarded lightly. It demonstrates consistent high standards, strong management and a clear focus on protecting customers.

“We want to recognise and congratulate every one of the 1,000 businesses that have achieved this milestone. Their commitment to food safety helps to protect public health and maintain confidence in Walsall’s thriving food sector. “

Councillor Adam Hicken, Portfolio Holder for Enforcement and Safe Communities

Achieving a 5-star rating requires consistency and a proactive approach to reducing or removing risks to public health. Maintaining robust, well-documented food safety procedures is essential.

Training is also a vital part of success. When staff understand safe food handling, temperature control and effective handwashing practices, risks are significantly reduced. Inspectors look not only at the presence of procedures, but at how effectively they are implemented in day-to-day operations.

The council continues to work closely with food business operators to provide advice and guidance, helping more establishments to improve standards and achieve the highest possible rating.
