Walsall Council approves Deeper Devolution Deal

Published on

Walsall Council has approved the West Midlands ‘Trailblazer’ Deeper Devolution Deal and implementation plan following a special Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 20 September 2023.

Walsall Council

The deal aims to generate economic growth and reboot the economy, provide vital housing, jobs and skills, build on existing strengths in the regional transport network, and drive net zero ambitions.

“ This landmark deal between the region and government supports our council priorities and it will have positive benefits for Walsall.

The transformation of our borough is already well underway with the Walsall Growth Corridor, redevelopment of brownfield sites and improvements to junction 10 of the M6 motorway. There is more for us to do and this deal will help us attract investment into Walsall, increase the economic prosperity of the borough and provide more job opportunities and quality housing for our residents.

In essence, this deal empowers more local decision making and we are looking forward to working closely with our partners in the West Midlands Combined Authority to deliver more for residents, businesses and communities. “

Councillor Mike Bird, Leader of Walsall Council

The West Midlands Deeper Devolution Deal was agreed in principle at the Mayor of the West Midlands and Portfolio Leaders’ group on 10 March 2023 and announced in the Chancellor’s spring statement the following week. All constituent authorities are considering and approving proposals and implementation plan. Subject to approval by all the constituent authorities, formal ratification of the deal with be sought at the West Midlands Combined Authority board in October 2023.

The deal will mark a new phase of devolution by bringing new powers and control over investment to the region. It will give the region an influential role in shaping government policy and it is estimated to be worth in the region of £1.5 billion of funding.
