Walsall College students take the lead at the WAW2040 Conference
Published on
Walsall’s next generation of leaders took centre stage at the recent WAW2040 Conference, which focused on the borough’s long-term vision. Ten students from Walsall College participated in dynamic workshops designed to help shape Walsall’s future.

With plans underway to grant 16-year-olds the right to vote, this event engaged young people to go beyond conversation and take the lead in driving change. The conference featured sessions on critical issues such as crime and improving financial management across the borough. These productive workshops enabled students to explore real-world challenges and propose solutions that reflect the concerns and aspirations of their generation.
“ I’m delighted to see so many young people stepping forward with such passion, creativity and purpose. Their voices are vital in shaping a borough that truly reflects the needs of its future residents. Through initiatives like WAW2040 and the Youth Summit tomorrow, we’re ensuring they have real opportunities to be heard and to influence decisions that matter. “
A standout moment came from the college’s own creative media students, who, as part of their student enterprise, Future Flames Productions, documented the event. The team has also supported the Walsall Voices Podcast, using digital media to amplify the voices of Walsall residents and share lived experiences aligned with the borough’s 2040 vision.
“ As citizens studying, living and working in the borough, our learners have a vital role to play in shaping and securing Walsall’s future growth and prosperity. Through We Are Walsall 2040 and other initiatives, we can ensure their voices are not only heard but acted upon in ways that demonstrate collaboration, inclusivity and an enterprising spirit—helping to bring about meaningful change. “
The WAW2040 vision is centred on creating a thriving, inclusive borough for future generations. The involvement of Walsall College students in the conference reflects a growing recognition that young people must play a role in shaping that long-term future. Their contributions are helping ensure the vision reflects the voices and values of Walsall’s diverse communities.
