Pupils of Beacon Primary School shine in Golden Orchard project
Published on
The community of Willenhall came together on Thursday 11 April, 2024 to plant one of the Tree Council’s new golden orchards on the New Invention Community Green.
Taking part in this celebration of nature were local children from the Beacon Primary School in Willenhall, alongside volunteer tree wardens and members of Walsall Council’s Healthy Spaces Team, and representatives from the Tree Council.
Enthusiastic pupils from the school were eager to take charge and oversee the planting of apple, plum, and Chinese hawthorn trees. Their efforts will help promote biodiversity and enhance the local environment, providing a sanctuary for wildlife.
“ This new orchard will contribute to the collective well-being of the community and the project symbolises our commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. We are grateful to the Tree Council for their generous support in supplying these trees as part of a national campaign to mark their 50th anniversary. This shows power of collaboration in nurturing our natural surroundings for generations to come. “
The Golden Orchards initiative is part of the broader mission of the Orchards for School project, which aims to empower schools and communities to cultivate green spaces that benefit both people and the planet. Through partnerships with organisations like the Tree Council, schools like Beacon Primary are able to inspire future generations to become champions of the environment.
As the trees take root and flourish, the Beacon Primary community eagerly anticipates the harvest season, with plans already underway for the inaugural apple crumble event.
