Provision of food waste collection agreed

Published on

Walsall Council cabinet members have agreed on how food waste collections will be implemented in Walsall.

Walsall Council House

In Walsall, food waste makes up around 40 per cent of the total waste in the borough, accumulating to around 28,500 tonnes. Of this food waste, 75 per cent was avoidable, with 28 per cent of all discarded food still in its original packaging.

Walsall Council explored two different options to deliver food waste collections in the borough - combined with garden waste or separate food waste collections. Separate food waste collections were found to be around £1 million cheaper.

Now cabinet has taken the decision to implement separate food waste collections, work will now take place to progress implementation. To enable delivery, households in Walsall will be provided with a small kitchen caddy for daily use and a larger kerbside caddy for weekly collection.

In the coming months, residents will see various council communications across different channels about the new HWRC, simpler recycling and food waste collections.

“ New legislation means we are required to offer weekly food waste collections to all households by March 31, 2026. Resident participation in food waste collections is optional.

“Depending on uptake, these collections could remove between 6,000 to 10,000 tonnes from the waste we send to landfill.

“Our new state-of-the-art waste facility currently being built in Aldridge will be vital in allowing us to deliver this service, and all our waste services, effectively moving forward. “

Councillor Kerry Murphy, Portfolio Holder for Street Pride

When complete, the new Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station will enhance service capacity, reduce queues, and introduce a reuse shop to divert items from landfills.

Procurement of required containers, vehicles and additional waste disposal arrangements, to enable the implementation of food waste collections, will now take place.
