Councillor Keir Pedley, Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care at Walsall Council, will present the report, which highlights the introduction and success of new occupational therapy clinics at the Goscote Centre in Walsall, and a commitment to develop a wider Pathway to Independence model of support to ensure residents receive support to maximise their independence before there is a need for long-term support.

“ It’s important that we provide the right support, at the right time, at the right place, for those who need it.

“We are committed to providing a care network that puts the people we support at the heart of everything we do and where everyone feels valued, supported and cared for.

“Our focus is empowering Walsall residents and communities to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives We want people to feel supported to maintain or improve their health, wellbeing and quality of life and the work outlined in this briefing to council shows that we are continuously improving how we operate and deliver quality services and improved outcomes for our residents.

The report details several key achievements over the last 12 months.

This includes:

  • Introducing occupational therapy clinics at the Goscote Centre in Walsall with the capacity to assess four people a day. These clinics assess and recommend provision of lower-level equipment and adaptations to support people to remain independent in their own homes for longer. Work is currently underway to double capacity and introduce more clinics in community-based settings.
  • Supporting 2,666 individuals to build on their strengths to maintain and/or maximise their independence. An increase of 16% in comparison to the previous year.
  • 92% of people felt the services they receive made them feel safe.
  • Achieving Independent Travel Training accreditation.
  • Supporting 3,259 people in the community. An increase of 7.03% since 2022/23.
  • Being recognised for the significant integrated work that has been done to ensure residents experience a seamless care and support journey across different agencies and achieving awards success with the Walsall Together Alliance at the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) Awards and Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards.
  • Securing funding in the region of £1,077 million across the Black Country from the Department of Health’s Accelerating Reform Fund.
  • Extending a programme of social work degree apprenticeships and supporting 15 social workers to complete the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) programme in 2023/24.
  • Securing funding to develop a community reablement offer as part of a wider Pathway to Independence model of support. This will ensure that people received support to maximise their independence before there is a need for long-term support.
