Night-time works planned for York’s Bridge project

Walsall Council is continuing work on a new bridge over the Wyrley and Essington Canal and associated carriageway improvements along Norton Road in Pelsall.

As part of the next phase of the scheme, carriageway surfacing works will take place on Norton Road between Charles Crescent and Wyrley Lane. To ensure the safety of both the workforce and the public, these works will be carried out under a night-time only road closure.

The closure will be in place for five consecutive nights, from Monday 9 February to Saturday 14 February 2026, between 7pm and 6am each night. During these hours, local diversion routes will be in operation between the Walsall and Staffordshire areas. Wherever possible, access to frontages will be maintained.

Outside of the closure hours, Norton Road will reopen as a single lane with temporary traffic lights in place. This approach has been chosen to minimise disruption during peak travel times and to support access to local businesses.

The new bridge is being constructed parallel to the historic York’s Bridge and forms a key part of the wider improvement scheme. The overall project remains on track for completion in March 2026.

“ We are nearing completion for this project and I want to thank residents and businesses for their patience while the works have been carried out. “

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader of Walsall Council

Construction of the new York’s Bridge began in August 2024. Once complete, the new bridge will provide a safer route for all road users, including a two-way traffic bridge and a dedicated footway. The project will also deliver parking bays to improve access to Pelsall North Common, as well as two ponds and 540 trees planted as saplings.
