The Green Social Prescribing Project is one of several initiatives being developed through Walsall's Nature Towns and Cities programme and contributes to the wider ambitions of the Walsall Together partnership to reduce health inequalities and improve wellbeing across the borough.

Following a competitive procurement process, Walsall Council has appointed MindKind to deliver the two-year project, which begins on 1 September.

The programme will bring together health services, social prescribers, community organisations and environmental partners to make it easier for people to access the many benefits that nature can provide. From supporting mental wellbeing and reducing loneliness to increasing physical activity and community connection, the project aims to help more residents experience the positive impact of spending time in nature.

A particular focus will be placed on supporting communities experiencing the greatest health inequalities and those who can face barriers to accessing nature, ensuring opportunities are developed for people of all ages and backgrounds across Walsall.

Funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund through the Nature Towns and Cities programme, the project will help strengthen links between health and nature across the borough and create a lasting legacy of nature-based health opportunities. It will also help inform the development of Walsall's Green Nature and Health Strategy, recognising the important role that parks, open spaces and natural environments play in supporting people's health and wellbeing.

“ We are delighted to mark the start of this important project. Walsall is fortunate to have a wealth of green and blue spaces including parks and recreation grounds, nature reserves, allotments, community gardens, fishing pools and canals, and we want more people to be able to benefit from them. Green Social Prescribing has the potential to improve health and wellbeing, strengthen communities and help tackle inequalities. We look forward to working with MindKind and partners across the borough to create lasting opportunities for residents to connect with nature. “

“ At Walsall Together, we are committed to bringing health, care, housing and community organisations together to support people in ways that help them stay independent and well. Green Social Prescribing is a great example of this approach in action, connecting people with opportunities in their local communities that can improve wellbeing, reduce isolation and support healthier lives. By working together and making the most of Walsall's fantastic green spaces and community assets, we can help ensure more residents receive the right support, closer to home, while reducing health inequalities across the borough. “

By 2035, the programme will work with 100 towns and cities across the UK to improve and create green space and natural infrastructure, aiming to help 10 million people enjoy better nature and green space close to home, and one million more children to be able to play in nature on their doorstep.
