The premiere screening of a documentary film exploring what it’s like for black and mixed ethnicity boys to grow up in Walsall is taking place on Wednesday 18 October 2023 from 12 midday to 3pm at The Light Cinema in Walsall. The film screening will take place at 1pm and it will be preceded by networking and light refreshments with a panel discussion afterwards.

Reformation 2

The one-hour documentary, entitled ‘Reformation 2 The System’, was commissioned by Walsall Youth Justice Service and partnership organisations, and developed in collaboration with youth organisation Open Lens Media, and film company Open Lens Productions.

The film explores the subject of disproportionality, and the fact that black and mixed heritage boys are consistently over-represented and under protected in the youth justice system. It features the experiences of three black and mixed heritage boys in Walsall and includes interviews with senior heads of services and members of the Walsall Youth Justice team.

“ This film brings the subject of disproportionality to life. It’s a visual and emotive picture that many boys experience growing up in the UK and the documentary helps us understand the needs of these boys and how we can address the disparity and prevent more black and mixed heritage boys from entering the criminal justice system. “

Councillor Stacie Elson, Portfolio Holder for Children
Walsall Council

“ In Walsall during 2019-21, black young people were more likely to receive one of the two most severe outcomes that young people can get when they’ve offended. Statistically, if you are black in this country, you are more likely to live in poverty. That comes with a whole host of risk factors which means you’re most likely to get into trouble or to come into contact with the criminal justice system. “

Phil Rutherford, Strategic Lead at Walsall Youth Justice Service

“ Our partnership with Walsall Youth Justice Service to support in tackling the issue of disproportionately is a vital component in shaping a better future for our black and mixed ethnicity boys living in Walsall. The sad reality is that the causes which set a trajectory for them to enter into the judicial system are often systemic and begin well before they encounter the justice system. We hope this film not only provides an account of their lived experiences and the disparities they face, but also part of the blueprint for change across the Walsall Youth Justice Board partnership services and its wider community. “

Daina Anderson, Founder and CEO of Open Lens Media

‘Reformation 2 The System’ is a documentary about the disproportional challenges faced by black and mixed heritage boys in the Walsall Youth Justice System and the solutions needed. It discusses the factors contributing to disproportionality, presenting causes and solutions and explains what strategies and plans are being developed locally to address disproportionality. It also touches on the findings of a thematic report and the importance of mentoring, alternative provision and support.

The film is a sequel to ‘Reformation’, which was screened in January 2020. This documentary featured five young people from Walsall who opened up on camera about past struggles in their lives and took a deeper look into their backgrounds and some of the causes about why they made certain decisions. Touching on issues to do with mental health, bullying and employment, ‘Reformation’ gives a true account of some of the challenges that young people face and looks at what needs to be done to help young people succeed.

Walsall Youth Justice Service is a multi-agency team including practitioners from various backgrounds such as youth work, social work, substance misuse services, mental health services, education and probation. The team helps young people between the ages of 10 to 17 who have committed an offence and have either received a disposal from the police or have been remanded or convicted in court.
