Brain in Hand is not condition-specific but is often used by people who are autistic; who have learning disabilities, or who struggle with anxiety-related mental health issues.

The pilot scheme, which is now live, aims to support people who struggle with these day-to-day difficulties to do more for themselves and move towards independence.

“ This is a valuable tool for our residents that we hope will help people transition into becoming more independent.

The system is fully personalised and allows users to build their Brain in Hand to their unique needs, so that it moulds around their life, not the other way around.

Commissioning this system reflects our unwavering commitment to supporting the people of Walsall. “

Councillor Keir Pedley, Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care

It is hoped that the use of Brain in Hand can create a ripple effect that reduces reliance on services and enables a person to grow in independence.

The system features personalised routines, prompts and reminders, allowing a user to monitor their mood, reflect on emotions and communicate how they feel.

A dedicated coach is also available through Brain in Hand to assist users in developing self-awareness and building greater independence.

The system also contains solutions for unexpected and overwhelming situations and a library of practical ready-made solutions for everyday challenges.

A first-of-its-kind study into the impact of Brain in Hand revealed that it significantly improved quality of life while reducing difficulties in the areas of anxiety, memory, self-injurious behaviour, and communication.

To access Brain in Hand, a person must be seen to benefit from the system and be referred by an Adults or Childrens service practitioner.
