The New Art Gallery Walsall celebrates South Asian Heritage Month with free community day

Mehndi, music, food and workshops: The New Art Gallery Walsall celebrates South Asian History Month with a special community day on Saturday 3 August. The free event taking place from 12-4pm will enable visitors to get creative with drop-in activities throughout the day.
The day will feature music curated by broadcaster and radio DJ Manpreet Darroch, ‘Punjabi Tales of Willenhall’ temporary photography exhibition, stalls from the Bangladeshi Progressive Society as well as local creatives selling artworks. Creative Factory will also be in attendance creating free mehndi hand designs for visitors.
Drop-in art and craft sessions will be led by local South Asian artists including:
- Nilupa Yasmin will host creative craft sessions on paper weaving.
- Haseebah Ali will showcase her work on Islamic Geometric patterns with gold leaf.
- Daya Bhatti will share her creativity and make fabric badges.
“ South Asian Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the rich culture and traditions of South Asia. Our community day offers a chance for everyone to come together, learn from each other, and experience the stories and heritage of South Asian culture.
Walsall town is happy to showcase and tell the stories behind the diverse histories and rich traditions of the South Asian community which make up a huge part of our borough. We have carefully curated exciting activities for everyone, and we hope you come along and enjoy the day. “
This year’s South Asian Heritage Month takes place from 18 July to 17 August with the theme ‘Free to Be Me.’ The month seeks to commemorate, mark and celebrate South Asian cultures, histories and communities.
