The New Art Gallery Walsall celebrates Diwali

Published on

The New Art Gallery Walsall will celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights with a free family-friendly festival including workshops, performances, food and more on Saturday 2 November 2024 from 12-4pm.

The day will feature captivating stories from the Indian subcontinent from Peter Chand, one of Europe’s most renowned storytellers. Bollywood Dream Dance, the largest Bollywood Dance company in the West Midlands will also be at the Gallery for a series of performances as well as mini workshops. Throughout the day local artist Daya Bhatti will be providing drop-in lamp-making workshops for all ages. Music will be provided by Manpaal Singh, jori player and harmonist.

There will also be an opportunity to explore the theme of light in paintings and drawings in the Permanent Collection as part of the Gallery’s free monthly Collections Tour on the same day. Gallery Assistants will consider how light reflects on landscapes by Jacob Epstein and Yasmin David, and compare it with the spiritual light in works by Odilon Redon and the glistening leaves of a 14th century gilt illuminated manuscript.

“ Diwali is one of the Gallery’s most popular annual celebrations. It promises to be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and learn about the festival, as well as explore different cultures through the arts. “
