National Authors Day: We ask our library staff for their favourites

Published on

Staff across Walsall’s libraries have come together to share their favourite wordsmiths to mark National Authors Day.

National Authors Day, three library staff

National Authors Day is celebrated on November 1 each year and reminds us of the profound impact writers have on shaping our understanding of the world and ourselves.

Everyone has a book or two they can’t get enough of, and National Authors Day provides the chance to appreciate the minds that created them.

Councillor Amandeep Garcha - Portfolio Holder for Resident Access and Housing Support

Author: George Orwell

“My favourite author is George Orwell. Whilst he’s a well-known author, he’s a recent discovery for me. He has a way of telling stories and gets his message across in quite a captivating way. Although his work may seem simple at face value, it carries a much deeper meaning and resonates with a wide audience.

“My earliest memories of reading are at Willenhall Library, where I always found myself caught in a Jacqueline Wilson or Roald Dahl book. Reading really brought me out of my shell and now our libraries offer so much more with its reading materials but also for support, guidance and even a place to socialise. So why not visit your local library to find out more.”

Dave White - Information Officer at Darlaston Library

Author: Zoe Sharp

“It's quite difficult because I think in general with favourite authors, they vary from time to time. But if I had to pick one, it would have to be Zoe Sharp. I think she's just a really good author who writes really well. I love the characters in all her different books. She's just a really good author and my favourite overall.”

Sam Threadkell - Information Officer at Aldridge Library

Author: Ella Risbridger

“My favourite new author, who I've only just discovered, is Ella Risbridger. She's a similar age to me, and she writes fiction and non-fiction, she writes for children and adults. Midnight Chicken is not like any book that I've ever read before. It's sort of part food memoir, part biography and a guide to life as well, I've recommended it to so many people.”

Michelle Elkes - Information Officer at Aldridge Library

Author: Bob Mortimer

“I don't have a particular favourite author, but I have been very interested in Bob Mortimer's books, particularly The Satsuma Complex, and I'm looking forward to reading his next book. I also read his autobiography, and it's really interesting because he writes how he speaks. So when I'm reading it, I'm hearing his voice, and I find that really interesting and funny. His stories are quite surreal, but also there's a thriller aspect to them, so I just find him really good fun.”

Levi Harris - Information Officer at Lichfield Street Hub

Author: TJ Klune

“My favourite author is TJ Klune because he delves into sci-fi fantasy but that's never the overall image of the book. He explores sexuality within his books, but he doesn't go into too much detail where it's hard to understand.”
