Mayor of Walsall shares wisdom with primary school councillors

A group of primary school pupils recently enjoyed a visit to meet the Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Anthony Harris.
Young people from Little Bloxwich C of E Primary School’s school council visited the Mayor’s parlour on 23 January 2025, to find out more about the role of Mayor and learn about the workings of local democracy.
Rachel Oliver, Deputy Headteacher at the school said, “Our school council had wonderful afternoon visiting the Mayor’s Parlour and the children were very interested in how Councillor Harris became Mayor.
“They learnt about the roles and traditions of being a town's Mayor, and found out interesting facts about his ceremonial robe, chains, and mace.
“The children also had the opportunity to visit the Council Chamber to see where councillor’s take their seats and vote on local democracy matters.”
Speaking about the visit, one of pupils, Jacob, said he really enjoyed getting to sit next to Mr Mayor’s seat in the Chamber.
Another pupil, Louisa, said her favourite part of the day was learning about the history of Council House.
“ It’s always a pleasure meeting with some of the borough’s youngest residents.
This group of pupils have taken on an important role at school, as they sit on the school’s council. They are already making a positive difference to their school community, by listening to their peers and taking important issues forward, which is the exact spirit and attitude we want to see from our future leaders.
It was wonderful to see how enthusiastic the children were during the day, especially when looking around the Council Chamber. I’m sure they will go on to make positive contributions to society in their endeavours. “
The group of pupils will take inspiration from their visit to see how it can be applied into their roles as school councillors.
