Knife Angel to continue inspiring change through planned events

Published on

Since its unveiling in Walsall Town Centre nearly two weeks ago, the imposing Knife Angel has evoked reflection and conversation around the devastating impact of knife crime.

So far, the 27ft tall sculpture comprised of 100,000 knives has attracted hordes of visitors.

Poignant speakers commented on their hope that the sculpture can serve as a call to action while it's in situ at Gallery Square during an opening ceremony held on Friday 1 December 2023.

An array of events will take place at the Knife Angel in the coming weeks, ranging from community engagement sessions to catastrophic bleed training provided by St John Ambulance.

There was even a walk led by faith groups on 14 December to reflect on violence and knife crime before the closing ceremony is held on Thursday 28 December 2023 at 3pm to mark the end of the angel’s stay.

“ This angel stands not only as a symbol of remembrance to those lives lost but as a call to action against the devastating impact of knife crime that touches our lives, and the lives of so many. When we embrace the Knife Angel, we confront the harsh reality of the consequences of knife crime head-on. It’s a poignant reminder that each blade represents a life altered, a family shattered, and a community left in pain.

The Knife Angel stands as both a work of art and a beacon of hope, encouraging us to join hands in the fight against knife crime and create a community where our shared humanity prevails.

I encourage anyone who can to come and see the angel’, especially at night, it is very powerful. It evoked an emotion in me I didn’t expect, and one I will not forget either. “

A book of reflection has also been set up for residents to express thoughts on the Knife Angel and share perspectives on the significance of its presence in the community.

The Knife Angel will remain in Gallery Square, outside the New Art Gallery, until Thursday 28 December 2023.
