Judo cup event brought nearly 600 visitors to Walsall in June

A new report showing the positive impact that the event had on the Walsall economy has recently been released.
Walsall Council received £251,733 in Commonwealth Games Legacy Funding from the West Midlands Combined Authority to support the European Judo Union's Junior Cup 2024. A new report showing the positive impact that the event had on the Walsall economy has recently been released.
The two-day event, which took place on Saturday 15 – Sunday 16 June 2024 at the University of Wolverhampton’s Walsall campus, saw 585 visitors come to Walsall, generating a direct economic impact of £230,000 for the West Midlands.
The report, compiled by British Judo, is an excellent example of the importance of large-scale events for local economies and shows the huge impact that the Junior Cup had on Walsall.
“ As a council, we worked with British Judo to support the event with the purpose of generating local excitement, pride and community engagement, as well as economic growth. We are extremely proud to be the home of British Judo and will continue to support the growth of the sport in the region.

Hosting the EJU Junior Cup in June 2024 enabled Walsall to showcase their top-class sporting event facilities on an international stage, with news coverage and live streaming, international entrants and supporters, and attendance by international Governing Body, the European Judo Union. Additionally, the event was an opportunity to showcase Walsall as the home of the British Judo Association and the host of extraordinary international sporting events with state of the art facilities.

The event offers a fantastic platform for the sport and as part of the post-event legacy plans from the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The EJU European Junior Cup is part of a European circuit, providing qualifying points for the international ranking lists and places for the European and World Championships and a stepping stone for potential participants in future Olympic Games.
Walsall was one of 15 areas across Europe that hosted an event in the 2024 European Junior Cup tour, alongside locations such as Malaga, Berlin and Prague.
