Fly tipping and pollution

EnviroCrime trailer tour rolls into town with two stops this September

Published on

Walsall Council’s EnviroCrime trailer is travelling around the borough once again and this time residents of St Matthews, Palfrey and Pleck are being invited to raise their environmental concerns with the council's fly-tipping education and prevention officers.

This roadshow is part of the council’s EnviroCrime project, which sees officers patrolling three wards each month to undertake thorough investigations into fly-tipped waste and litter, tracking down the perpetrators.

In September, the council is focusing on St Matthews, Palfrey, and Pleck. Council officers have been proactively addressing resident reports in these areas, particularly fly-tipping hotspots on Price Street in Pleck and within Walsall town centre. These reports have also raised concerns about needles and sharps being littered on the Intown Row car parks, and dog fouling incidents at Walsall Arboretum.

“ We are incredibly proud that our EnviroCrime initiative is having such a positive impact across the borough. We’ll be focusing on more areas this September and residents are invited to use the roadshow as an opportunity to address their concerns with our council officers first hand.

Our residents are the people who know their area best. We want to know the environmental concerns that have the most impact on you. Your insights are invaluable to us, and as part of our ward focus in St Matthews, Palfrey, and Pleck, your input will help drive our efforts.

Together, we can make a significant difference in keeping our community clean and safe. “

Councillor Kerry Murphy, Portfolio Holder for Street Pride at Walsall Council

To gain invaluable information from residents, the council invites anybody with information to come and speak to fly-tipping education and prevention officers to log their concerns as part of the monthly ward focus. The trailer will also serve as a mobile information hub where residents can learn about the council's bulky waste collections, household waste recycling centres (HWRCs), and other related services.

Future locations for the trailer will be announced in due course, with October's focus wards set to be Birchills and Leamore, Blakenall, and Bloxwich East.

Notes to editor:

• Fly-tipping is a serious criminal offence which carries a fine of up to £20,000 (unlimited if indicted to the Crown Court). Offenders can even be sent to prison.

• There are two Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC’s) in the borough of Walsall which are free to use: Fryers Road, Bloxwich and Merchants Way, Aldridge.

• The council offers a bulky items collection service for residents who may struggle to take larger items to a Household Waste Recycling Centre. This can be booked through the Council website.

• Residents who are struggling to manage their household waste, for example because of a growing family or an ongoing medical condition, can apply for a larger bin through the Council’s website.
