Don’t Be a Rotten Egg: Recycle it right this Easter!
Published on
Walsall Council encourages residents to reduce waste and recycle responsibly this Easter.

Easter is a time for celebration, family gatherings, and plenty of sweet treats, but this time of year also brings its fair share of rubbish. Residents are urged to recycle responsibly this Easter and help reduce their environmental impact.
“ Easter is a wonderful time for making memories, celebrating traditions, and enjoying some well-deserved chocolate, however, it also generates a large amount of waste. By recycling correctly, we can reduce what ends up in landfill and give materials a new lease of life. “
Here are some top Easter recycling tips from Walsall Council.
• Easter egg foil: Foil should be scrunched up and disposed of in your green recycling bin. Combine smaller foil pieces into one larger ball – the bigger it is, the easier it is to recycle. If the foil springs back open, it is likely laminated and should be go into your grey household waste bin.
• Easter egg packaging: Cardboard boxes and plastic trays can be recycled in your green bin. Remember to flatten cardboard packaging to save space and make room for more recyclables.
• Gift baskets and sweet wrappers: Plastic cellophane wrapping is not yet recyclable and should go into your grey household waste bin. Sweet wrappers also belong in your grey bin.
• Easter cards: Easter cards and their envelopes can be disposed of into your green recycling bin. If they have a glitter or foil design, these must go into your grey household waste bin, as these materials cannot be recycled.
• Flowers: When flowers have wilted, they can go into your brown garden waste bin. Free garden waste collections resumed across the borough on 31 March 2025.
• Gift bags/wrapping paper: Reuse gift bags and wrapping paper wherever possible to reduce environmental impact and save money. If you must dispose of wrapping paper, scrunch it into a ball and dispose of into your green recycling bin.
• Food waste: Easter feasts often mean leftover food. Ensure any leftover food waste is placed in a tied bin liner and disposed of in your grey household waste bin. To avoid contaminating recyclables, clean food packaging before placing it into your green bin.
• Easter egg hunts: Easter egg hunts are a common activity this time of year. To reduce plastic waste, swap plastic disposable eggs with chocolate or a sustainable alternative.
Let’s celebrate responsibly and recycle wherever possible!
