This week is Social Work Week (Monday 18 to Friday 22 March 2024) and social workers at Walsall Council are supporting the week by promoting and celebrating their profession and highlighting the positive impact of social work in the local community.

Now in its fourth year, this national awareness week aims to bring people together to learn, connect and influence change across the social work sector in England. This year’s themes focus on continuous learning, connecting with the community, and influencing change through understanding challenges and successes in the sector and exploring innovative solutions. This includes recognising World Social Work Day on Tuesday 19 March 2024.

Social work is a varied and demanding occupation. Social workers work in a wide range of roles and help protect vulnerable children and adults from harm or abuse, and support people to live independently. They uphold the rights of children and adults who may have difficulty having their voice heard, listening to, respecting, and protecting those who need protecting.

“ The job of a social worker is demanding, but truly rewarding. They deal with complex situations on a daily basis, and the decisions they make can have a profound impact on the lives of vulnerable people. Our social work team consistently demonstrates a high level of commitment and expertise, and I am incredibly proud of the work they do. “

Councillor Keir Pedley, Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care
Walsall Council

“ Social workers are the backbone of our children's services team. Their expertise, commitment and care are essential in ensuring the safety and well-being of children and families in Walsall. Seeing the positive impact our social workers have on the lives of children and families is truly inspiring. I want to express my sincere gratitude to our social workers for everything they do. “

Councillor Stacie Elson, Portfolio Holder for Children
Walsall Council

One of the activities taking place this week has been coordinated by a group of social work students on placement at the council. Over the last few weeks, the students have been collecting donations of adult coats, hats, scarves and gloves.

They will be taking them to the Manor Farm Hub outlet at the Saddlers Centre in Walsall and giving them out to anyone in need of warm clothing on Thursday 21 March 2024, between 9.30am and 1pm. This event will also be an opportunity for residents to come along and share their stories and experiences and find out more about social care and what available support is available in the community.
