Friday 8 September 2023 marks the first anniversary of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Walsall Council is marking the anniversary by reflecting on her visits to Walsall and sharing tributes on its online and social media channels throughout the week.
The Queen visited Walsall three times during her 70-year reign. In 1962, she visited Walsall Arboretum as part of a short tour of the Midlands. In 1977, she returned to mark her Silver Jubilee, and in 2000, she officially opened the New Art Gallery in Walsall.
“ Queen Elizabeth II was a much loved and respected figure who devoted her life to her country. She was a remarkable person and we will be marking the day by reflecting on her long reign. I hope that residents will share their own personal memories of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch too. “
In 2022, hundreds of people lined up to sign the Book of Condolence at the town hall in Walsall in the days following her passing. Her life-long connection to the borough was also reflected by her personal fashion choices and, during her life, she was rarely seen without a Launer handbag, proudly made in Walsall.
