Coronation celebrations across the borough of Walsall
Published on
Residents in Walsall will be celebrating the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III over the coronation bank holiday weekend from Saturday 6 to Monday 8 May 2023.
Community events including street parties, BBQs, afternoon teas, picnics and community fun days are bringing local communities together across the borough to mark the occasion.
To help local residents celebrate, Walsall Council in partnership with Walsall Community Network, has supported 150 events through its King’s Coronation Fund. Almost £20,000 of funding has been allocated, with individual grants of up to £150 being made available to support community-based events.
Community events are taking place this week and across the weekend with many community groups also helping good causes and taking part in The Big Help Out on Monday.
One of the weekend highlights includes a coronation lunch party at Borneo Street Allotments on Sunday 7 May 2023. This will include the planting of a tree that originally formed part of the 21-metre/70-ft tall Tree of Trees which stood outside Buckingham Palace for the Platinum Jubilee last year. Awarded by The Queen’s Green Canopy tree planting initiative, the tree will be planted by the Mayor of Walsall and His Majesty’s Deputy Lieutenant of the West Midlands, David Frost CBE DL.
Other local events include a Walk of Faith between different places of worship to celebrate the coronation, a coronation party at Streetly Community Library and a coronation themed Sunday Art Club at The New Art Gallery on Sunday 7 May 2023. Free for children aged 4+ years, just drop in between 12 midday and 3pm and have a go at making a fancy crown, an orb and a sceptre.
The Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Rose Martin, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the West Midlands, Sir John Crabtree OBE, and Deputy Lieutenant David Frost CBE DL will be in attendance at some of the events.

“ There has been a fantastic response to our King’s Coronation Fund and I’m looking forward to meeting residents and attending lots of community events. We want local people to come together to mark this very special national event and celebrate with their neighbours, families and friends. Walsall’s community spirit is shining through and I’m so proud of the borough. “
“ It is hugely encouraging to see that communities across Walsall are using the opportunity of the coronation to build links and promote themselves and their activities. It is clear that real community spirit is very much alive and prospering in the borough. “
