A one-year review into the temporary hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) measures in Walsall town centre has been carried out.

The National Vehicle Threat Mitigation Unit (part of Counter Terrorism Policing) review recommended two improvements to the current measures. These changes were brought into effect on the evening of Thursday 27 March 2025.

At The Bridge, an additional double barge has been installed behind the tree outside the Co-op, near the bus station, strengthening the existing barriers in the area.

In Bradford Street, the barrier (designed to prevent vehicle attacks) has been replaced with connected barges, similar to ones that have been installed previously to provide consistent security around the town centre.

Since the introduction of the measures last year, codes for entry have been shared with blue light services on a continual basis, to ensure access where needed. Access to businesses and the market remains unaffected.

“ It is vital that we prioritise the safety of our communities and I am pleased to see that we are continuing the hostile vehicle mitigations in the town centre to protect visitors and businesses, as well as enhancing the existing measures in place. “

Councillor Garry Perry
Leader of Walsall Council

Temporary HVM measures have been in place in Walsall town centre since February 2024. Barriers with coded lock allowing for access are situated at Bradford Street, Station Street, Lower Hall Lane and both ends of High Street.
