Carpathian Community Shop to open in Palfrey this September
Published on
A new community shop is set to open in Palfrey this autumn, offering affordable, nutritious food and everyday essentials to local residents.

The Carpathian Community Shop will open inside the Walsall Cultural Centre on Milton Street on Wednesday 17 September 2025, thanks to financial assistance from Walsall Council’s grant programme launched earlier this year to support not-for-profit community shops.
Run by Nash Dom CIC, the shop will build on the success of the Nash Dom Community Fridge, providing a sustainable and dignified way for residents to access low-cost groceries. Shoppers will find pantry staples, toiletries and fresh surplus produce, all priced to be budget-friendly.
The store will operate on an affordable membership model, with an annual fee of £5, and will open six days a week.
“ We’re proud to be supporting the expansion of Walsall’s community shop network, ensuring that help is available where it’s most needed. The rising cost of living is affecting many in our borough, and these community-run spaces offer both practical support and a welcoming environment for everyone. “
“ We’re very excited to open a shop that brings together people from across the Carpathian region - Ukraine, Romania, Slovakia, Poland and beyond - in Walsall. The name ‘Carpathian’ symbolises a shared heritage and common values. But importantly, this isn’t just an Eastern European shop - it’s a place for everyone in Palfrey. We’ve made sure there are plenty of plant-based, vegetarian and halal-friendly options, so no one is left out. Our goal is to celebrate diversity while building a stronger, resilient community together. “
The Carpathian Community Shop will join existing sites in Bloxwich, Bentley, Darlaston, Lucy’s Pantry and Blakenall, forming part of a growing borough-wide network of community-run stores.
Residents can look forward to:
- A friendly, inclusive shopping environment with staff and volunteers on hand to help
- High quality, low cost essentials for everyday living
- A commitment to zero waste by using surplus produce and promoting sustainability
- Opportunities for cultural exchange through food and shared traditions
The official launch event will take place on Wednesday 17 September from 4pm to 6pm at 95 Milton Street, WS1 4LA.
