Cabinet report outlines success of council’s ‘Proud’ transformation

Published on

An update on the progress of Walsall Council’s transformation journey over the past five years, recognising the successful outcomes and outlining the approach to service transformation going forward, is to be presented by the Leader of Walsall Council, Councillor Mike Bird, at a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 20 March 2024.

In October 2018, the council established its ‘Proud’ programme, with the aim of transforming the way the council works. This established three key indicators, known as Proud Promises, to achieve better outcomes and customer experience, increase employee satisfaction and engagement, and improve service efficiency and performance.

“ I welcome this report and am delighted that the Proud programme of work has delivered significant transformation change, opening up access to digital services while delivering better outcomes for residents and achieving approximately £54 million of financial benefits.

Over the past five years, the council has transformed itself as an organisation and embedded a culture of continuous improvement. The result is a confident and agile organisation that’s at the helm of £1.5 billion regeneration plans for the borough. Our transformation was recognised in the findings of last year’s positive Local Government Association (LGA) Peer Review, and it has also resulted in the council being shortlisted recently in the 2024 Local Government Chronicle (LGC) Awards in the Most Improved Council Award category. “

“ This report highlights our improved customer satisfaction levels and more than 7 out of 10 people who contact the council are satisfied with the way that their enquiry is dealt with.

As part of our transformation programme, we have introduced 29 Walsall Connected centres across the borough in local community organisations, libraries and partner organisations. In the last 18 months, they have supported almost 14,000 residents and they are making a real impact right in the heart of our communities, helping bridge the digital divide for those people who need additional face-to-face support in our increasingly technological world. “

The Cabinet report outlines the next phase of transformation for the council. With the Proud Promises firmly embedded into the identity of the council, transformation is to be aligned to the strategic objectives and outcomes in the refreshed council plan and will focus on addressing emerging areas of demand and cost pressures, ensuring the council is well equipped to handle regeneration of the borough at pace.
